A fantastic group that my daughter has been a part of for a few years now. Seeing her confidence increase with all the support she is given, not to mention all the fun she has, is amazing.

Some of my best memories of my teenage years were here. They allowed me to be myself when others wouldn’t. I grew so much as a performer and as a person. Would highly recommend to anyone.

My three children love Dynamic Youth Theatre as do I. It's a lovely inclusive group run by lovely people. Can't wait for the next show. Alice in Wonderland was amazing. Thank you so much.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions and answers
Yes, we’re currently taking on new members. If you’re aged 6-18, click on the ‘New Joiners Form‘, select ‘Performer Aged 6-18’, fill out the application form and a member of our team will get in touch with you. If you have any questions about adult memberships for volunteers, please refer to the bottom of this FAQ.
To join you need to audition but it’s very straightforward and in a supportive and friendly environment. The audition itself will only take a few minutes and we like to hear you speak a short excerpt of text, sing a little bit of a song and we may ask about your dance experience. It is informal but you may wish to come prepared with a song (happy birthday is fine!). We then ask that you join in with the session with the rest of the cast so you can get a feel for how we work and who you will be working with. This means you can feel confident that joining us is the right decision, before committing to the show.
We hold weekly rehearsals in Southampton throughout the school term, with two performances each year (usually in January and July). We currently meet at Paint Pots Nursery in Portswood on Mondays from 18:15 to 19:45 (extended to 20:30 for principals most weeks and the whole cast as we approach show week).
Membership costs £50 per year (September to August), plus a £5 stage levy per show that helps cover the cost of costumes. DYT’s membership fees are deliberately kept low to ensure that everyone has access to the performing arts, regardless of their economic situation or background. However, in order to keep membership fees so low, we rely on fundraising. To donate or learn more please click here.
We hold separate auditions for main roles as we plan each show. A sub-committee holds the auditions where performers normally read a section of dialogue and sing a verse from a relevant song. It’s worth noting that talent, enthusiasm, and the potential of the performer are all considered equally when assigning roles. However, you don’t need to audition if you don’t want a main part and would rather be in the chorus.
If you don’t get the part you auditioned for this time, don’t worry. You can still perform in the chorus and there will always be more opportunities in the future!
No, we source all of our costumes ourselves, which is what the stage levy is for. However, you will normally need to provide your own dance shoes and you may be asked to provide basic items of clothing such as tights, leggings and T-shirts.
Most of our shows will include elements of acting, singing, and dancing. There are, however, certain roles that involve more singing, while other roles may involve more dancing or speaking, so audition for the role that suits your skillset best.
Absolutely. Whether you’re an ex-member, parent or guardian, have a passion for the arts or just like helping out, we’re always on the lookout for volunteers. We’re a dynamic and friendly bunch and need people to assist with things like set construction and costumes in the run-up to performances, and with things like lighting, sound, scene changes and front-of-house on the night. Plus adult volunteer membership is free, so if you’re interested in just click the ‘New Joiners Form‘, select ‘Adult Volunteer Helper’ and let us know if there’s a particular area you’d like to get involved in.
Hopefully we‘ve answered your question above, but if not, feel free to drop our secretary a line at [email protected]k who will be happy to assist you!
